There are several ways radiation therapy can be delivered. Radiation therapy can be external or internal. The most common way is by external radiation in which a radiation is directed at the tumor from a machine (Dollinger, Rosenbaum 62). Internal or systemic radiotherapy delivers radiation by giving a radioactive source intravenously or by injection (62). Depending on the type of cancer, some people are treated with both types of therapy. Radiation therapy can be used anywhere in the body to treat any kind of cancer. Depending on what type of radiation therapy, it can have some side effects. The most common ones include fatigue, hair loss near the treated area, and skin darkening in the area exposed to a beam of radiation. ("Radiation Therapy for Cancer," 1) There are also safety concerns that patients have when they are treated with radiation therapy. Many people that receive radiation therapy treatment, worry about exposing family and love ones to radiation, as well as the side effects. Radiation effects on the normal tissues are divided into acute and chronic effects (Schreiber). Acute effects occur during the course of therapy and during the post therapy period (approximately 2–3 weeks after the completion of a course of irradiation) (Schreiber).

The topic of my research paper is radiation caused illness and I chose this topic because of the radiation leak in Fukushima, Japan due to the massive earthquake and tsunami. Nearly 20,000 people were killed by the devastating earthquake and tsunami. Although there were no deaths connected with the radiation leak, there is much concern over its long–term effects. I was eager to find out how the radiation leak would affect the citizens in that area over a period of time. Although these forms of radiation are nearly harmless, ionizing radiation can be dangerous and comes from sources such as gamma rays from radioactive materials and nuclear explosions from nuclear power plant accidents or atomic bombs. Throughout my 3 years studying radiation therapy, I have had many experiences which have shaped the way I perceive my role as a radiation therapist. I have gone from thinking that radiation therapists plan radiation therapy and set patients up to receive treatment, to understanding the holistic scope of roles and responsibilities radiation therapists have.
On my first ever placement block at The Canberra Cancer Centre in October 2014, as well as getting my first ever real–world glimpse into what radiation therapy actually entailed; I witnessed one of my patients experience an extremely heartbreaking family tragedy which lead me to question all of my previous assumptions of what a radiation therapist's role encompasses and also it gave me an eye–opening insight into the patients struggles we may overlook or fail to recognise. This patient's family member had sadly committed suicide interstate and the patient was convinced that her diagnosis had contributed to his demise. This experience gave me a new level of empathy for patients as I had learnt that you could never assume what's going on in their personal lives outside of the clinical setting. I had learned that when situations like this arise, I must present myself to the patient as not only a health professional but also a friend, so they feel comfortable talking to me about what support they require and so I can reassure them that everything will be okay and also that their treatment will not be compromised.

Triboluminescence is the emission of light that occurs due to friction between two surfaces. Radiation therapy is the use of high–energy radiation from x–rays, gamma rays, neutrons, protons, and other sources to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors (National Cancer Institute, 2016). One of the main purposes of radiation is to preserve the normal cells while killing the cancer cells. To fully understand the importance of radiation therapy it is imperative to understand its discovery. The discovery of radioactivity is attributed to Henri Becquerel in Paris. His discovery was purely accidental, as most discoveries are, while attempting an experiment that utilized the sun, uranium, and photographic plates. On 26–27 February 1896, Henri Becquerel took the uranium and photographic plates wrapped in black paper to initiate his experiment by placing them in the path of sun light, but to his misfortune it was overcast both days. Thinking that his experiment was a failure, Becquerel decided to develop the photographic plates and found that uranium did not need the sun's rays to emit radiation due to its own radioactive properties, thus discovering radioactivity. The actual term "radioactivity" was coined by Marie Curie, a Polish born physicist, who along with her husband had been studying the phenomenon that was discovered by Becquerel (Lawrence Berkely National Lab, 2000).

Being that there are so many different types and that all the types have different ranges of how far they can travel all the walls in the x–ray rooms are lined with lead so nothing get out into the public area. That is just one way hospitals try to keep exposure down, another is they have lead shield that they wear and put on the patients. So why do we care about radiation?

If people could think of different possibilities to solve war then that should try because the worst disaster that could happen has to deal with atomic weapons.
An example from the movie that shows about both the movie and short story is similar is when Klaatu tells Helen Bensen why he has come to earth. Everyone besides Helen and Professor Barnhardt wants to take him away and kill him because they think he is going to destroy the earth. But in reality, Klaatu has come to earth only to warn Americans how the earth could actually be destroyed and that is it's by its own people. Helen even gets mad at her fiancé Tom Stevens because he is trying to stop Klaatu like the rest.
"There Will Come Soft Rains" and The Day the Earth Stood Still have the same exact theme. The short story and the movie did a nice job with relating the topics and describing what exactly is the main idea. Both clearly stated that the main idea is to warn people on how deadly atomic weapons are and what they could do the earth. Besides just having to deal with atomic weapons they both also dealt with the future and science fiction as well.
