Life is a Struggle Essay examples
Life is something that requires a considerable amount of physical and mental effort. Some are fortunate enough to have everything prepared for them. Such as some are born into money; some come across good fortune yet most work hard from the start to get some where in the world. It just all depends on how you were brought into this world. For some people, life is full of stress and hardships. That's how life was for someone very dear to me. He had it difficult from the start. However he chose not to let life get him down. When life gave him lemons, he made lemonade. From the day that high school started, he had to work to support his seven siblings and his mother. His options were to either get a job or go to college. Thinking of his family, and how he needed to support them, this man decided to obtain a job at a jewelry store at the mall in Anderson. There he worked for two years as an employee until he was finally given the chance to operate the store himself. From there, over the course of four years, this man owned jewelry store all across South Carolina. He was given an opportunity to expand into other businesses and he embraced it with open arms. Soon his business had reached New York, California, Florida, and Georgia. Life once again was peaceful until the jewelry business plummeted. He sold all his stores and moved to Georgia. Now he had nothing to his name. So again, like before, he started anew. With a store opened in one year to four more over the course of three years. With the experience he had gained in life, he was able to start over from scratch. From the time he was born, this man had nothing to his name. No money, no
HIV and AIDS Essay
HIV is the human immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS. A member of a group of viruses called retroviruses, HIV infects human cells and uses the energy and nutrients provided by those cells to grow and reproduce. AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) is a disease in which the body's immune system breaks down and is unable to fight off certain infections, known as "opportunistic infections," and other illnesses that take advantage of a weakened immune system. When a person is infected with HIV, the virus enters the body and lives and multiplies primarily in the white blood cells. These are the immune cells that normally protect us from disease.
The hallmark of HIV infection is the progressive loss of a specific...show more content...
Most of them do not know they carry HIV and may be spreading the virus to others. Here in the U.S., nearly one million people have HIV infection or AIDS, or roughly one out of every 250 people. At least 40,000 Americans become newly infected with HIV each year, and it is estimated that half of all people with HIV in the U.S. have not been tested and do not know they are carrying the virus.
Since the beginning of the epidemic, AIDS has killed more than 30 million people worldwide, including more than 500,000 Americans. AIDS has replaced malaria and tuberculosis as the world's deadliest infectious disease among adults and is the fourth leading cause of death worldwide. Over 13 million children have been orphaned by the epidemic. A person who is HIV–infected carries the virus in certain body fluids, including blood, semen, vaginal secretions, and breast milk. The virus can be transmitted only if such HIV–infected fluids enter the bloodstream of another person. This kind of direct entry can occur (1) through the linings of the vagina, rectum, mouth, and the opening at the tip of the penis; (2) through intravenous injection with a syringe; or (3) through a break in the skin, such as a cut or sore. Usually, HIV is transmitted through:
Unprotected sexual intercourse (either vaginal or anal) with someone who is HIV infected.
Women are at greater risk of HIV infection through vaginal sex than men, although
My Personal Identity Essay
A person's identity is shaped by many different aspects. Family, culture, friends, personal interests and surrounding environments are all factors that tend to help shape a person's identity. Some factors may have more of an influence than others and some may not have any influence at all. As a person grows up in a family, they are influenced by many aspects of their life. Family and culture may influence a person's sense of responsibilities, ethics and morals, tastes in music, humor and sports, and many other aspects of life. Friends and surrounding environments may influence a person's taste in clothing, music, speech, and social activities. Personal interests are what truly set individuals apart. Society has had a limited impact on my lifestyle, mostly because I despise trends. The largest trends I despise are rap and hip–hop and the clothing, attitudes, and type of speech that that type of 'music' is breeding. I chose to steer away from that crowd, but it may also be because I live my life off of adrenaline. My high on life is the energy I have when I get my blood pumping, my heart pounding, and my adrenaline raging. Most aspects of my individuality reflect that very well. I love hard, aggressive music, and also guns, but my passion in life is extreme sports, whether it be on a dirt bike, a bmx bike, a snowmobile, or a snowboard. I have a strong set of morals and ethics that I have partly adopted from my parents, but some are also partly my own. My morals mostly consist of karma (being kind, caring, helpful, truthful, and considerate to others), not littering (especially in nature), respecting nature, keeping a clean and welcoming home, success that is measured with happiness and not possessions, and having strong family ties. I feel that I am very strongly rounded individual who is going to go far in life. Many people would agree with that, although some people just think that I am an absolutely crazy person who has a death wish and will not go anywhere but to the hospital or the morgue.
Educational experiences also tend to influence a person's identity. I have not had too many educational
The Importance of Homework Essay
Students spend hours doing it, teachers spend hours checking it. Homework is sometimes a burden to teachers and students but still it is necessary. Some people doubt homework's effectiveness, but teachers and researchers agree homework is essential. Homework helps students get better grades in school.
Some people don't know exactly what homework is. Homework is defined as an out of class activity assigned to students as an extension or elaboration of classroom work(KidSource). There are three types of homework teachers generally give out. The first is Practice assignments, they are assignments that reinforce newly acquired skills or knowledge(KidSource). An example of these assignments is writing definitions down for new words...show more content...
Parents, students, and teachers all sometimes wonder how useful is homework? Though studies examining the relationship between homework and school achievement have been inclusive(ERIC). Still many teachers and researchers still agree that homework helps students achieve higher grades in school. Schools that assigned homework frequently showed higher student achievement than schools that assigned little homework(ERIC). This means that homework is working. Studies have generally found that if teachers carefully plan homework, homework can be quite helpful(KidSource). Homework has proven its effectiveness and is a very powerful factor in student performance.
Students should only spend enough time on homework so that the subject is reinforced and not just a waste of time. The national PTA suggest that from K–3 grades there should be no more than 20 minutes a day, for 4–6 grades there should be 20–40 minutes of homework, and from 7–12 grades time varies do to types of subjects and number of subjects taken(KidSource). Anymore than these recommended amount of times is seen excessive by the national PTA. Surprisingly U.S. students are working as hard as Asians: 24% of eighth graders do more then two hour of homework compared to Japans 28% and Germanys 17%(Brimelow108). Are we working to hard, researchers don't think so, U.S. student grades are improving. As of 1996 one in every sixth grader does more than an hour of
Essay on Volcanoes
Volcanoes
Volcanoes are natural phenomena which are on the Earth's surface through which molten rock and gases escape from below the surface (Tarbuck, 139). These volcanoes are very interesting to observe and to study because of their amazing occurrences and majestic lava eruptions. Volcanoes have been studied ever since the beginning of mankind and the word "volcano" is thought to be derived from Vulcano, a volcanic island in the Aeolian Islands of Italy whose name in turn originates from Vulcan, the name of a god of fire in Roman mythology. Consisting of several types, volcanoes can extrude several forms of magma and can also release multiple gases. These extruded materials can affect the Earth's structure and atmosphere.

Last but not least, composite volcanoes also make up some of the earth's surface. Composite volcanoes have a conical shape, with a steep summit area and gradually sloping flanks, and are nearly symmetrical in structure (Tarbuck, 141). These volcanoes release silica–rich and gaseous magma that is highly viscous and travels very short distances. These three types of volcanoes that occupy the earth have seemingly different physical characteristics and behavioral changes.
A volcanic eruption is one of the most dangerous and eventful natural disasters that can take place. During these eruptions, several factors are taken into account. Each type of volcano discussed above has a different form of lava: one's might be highly fluid and the other might be very viscous. Lava can take many shapes as it is extruded from a volcano. One such form is that of pahoehoe. Usually common on the Hawaiian volcanoes, pahoehoe is a form of lava which is smooth and ropy and causes by the congealment of lava as it is released from the volcano (Williams, 32). Another form of lava is one that is named aa. This lava consists of jumbles of rough, clinkery, and spinose fragments, ranging from small chips to blocks measuring meters on a side (Williams, 37). Aa flows are cool and thick and can advance at rates between 5 and 50 meters per hour (Tarbuck, 145). Lava can also take a block formation
Introduction to Soccer Essay
Soccer is a popular sport played all over the world. Even though it has only been popular in the United States for the past 30 years, soccer has been a long time favorite most everywhere else. The sport dates back to the Egyptians, who played games involving the kicking of a ball. Now, the sport has grown to a global pastime, including men's and women's teams, and the World Cup (which is played every four years).
Soccer originated with kicking games played by people in ancient civilizations. The modern version came about in the early nineteenth century, in England. It started as a game involving kicking and handing, but later this branched off into two separate sports: rugby and football (which is what the English call soccer). Around...show more content...
In addition to the field itself, all that is needed for a game is two goals (eight feet high and eight yards apart) and a ball. Each player wears hard plastic or padded shingaurd, covered by long socks, for protection during play. Cleats are also worn for traction on the field. A goalie may also wear a special padded shirt, and gloves to protect his or her hands. A standard field, as regulated by the Federation Internationale de Football Association (or FIFA), has a length between 100 and 130 yards, and a width of between 50 and 100 yards.
The rules of play for soccer have deliberately been kept simple. The referee makes most of the decisions, and attempts to encourage fair play. The game starts off with a kick off, and the teams are allowed to pass, dribble, juggle, head, kick, and shoot the ball to place it down the field, and (hopefully, or eventually) into their opponent's goal. If the ball is kicked off the field over the length of the field, the other team is given a throw–in, where the ball is thrown over the player's head, and back onto the field. If the ball is kicked over the goal, or across the width of the field, either a corner kick results (by the offensive team, where the ball is placed on the corner of the field and kicked into play) or the defensive team is awarded a goal kick, where the ball is placed on the corner of the goal box, and kicked back into play. If a goal is scored, the ball is taken back to the center of
Essay on Violence
Violence is one of the most problematic issues society faces today, and it has been increasing day after day, in the streets of our cities. The most common description of what violence really is can be given as negativity towards something or someone either through physical or verbal actions, which often causes the victim to suffer pain. The different types of violence that exist in our multi–cultural society are out–numbered, but the most evident ones are domestic, gang, sexual, and racial violence. While violence can definitely be reduced, it will never be eliminated due to the nature of humans.

On October 24 2000, a news article headline read, "Gang wars 6 Dead". This event had taken place in Etobicoke, and the news article contained sentences like "Six victims in six months" and "calculated executions". It also contained terms like "Bloods" and "Crips". These terms and sentences have officially crossed the border and have become all too familiar in Canadian cities. In order to cut back this outlaw behaviour, we need to educate our youth about the ill effects of gangs, drugs, guns, and should try to persuade them to instead make friends with those who accept you for who you are and use all their time in doing something positive and proactive. As a result of reducing and preventing gang violence, many cities have created special task forces and given schools their own police officers.
Sexual violence is another form of violence that has plagued our cities. This crime involves violence that is specifically sexual in nature, to which the victim does not give consent. According to 2005 statistics, 51% of all Canadian women have experienced at least one incident of sexual violence. 6 out of 10 victims who reported being sexually violated were under 17. These numbers are alarming and scary. It is extremely important to get rid of such sinister crimes in our communities because it robs the victims of their innocence, self–esteem, confidence, and even trust in our society. The

Introduction to Psychology Essay examples
Introduction to Psychology
The concern about life is a main human characteristic. No matter if his concern is concentrated in himself or in persons or things that surround him and constitute his environment, everybody wants to know why people, himself included, behave the way they behave. Everybody, also, wants to improve his behavior, so as to live in harmony with himself and the society.
The Greek word Psychology, is a word consisted of the words ψυχή–soul and λόγος–utterance, talk. So, generally, psychology is the science that examines the soul. The heartbeats, the movements of our head are behavior. The way we eat, the way we drink, the way we walk, we talk, are behavior. The construction of a bridge, the composition of a song are behavior. The fantasies of a child, the dreams of a adolescent, the illusions of an alcoholic are behavior. Although we are all familiar with human behavior, a little do we understand or we can explain about it.
Since our infancy we learn about behavior through the experiences and the knowledge that we get by observing other people or having relations with them. Living in society leads us to watch and try to explain the way people behave. But that is not always easy. Sometimes we cannot understand even ourselves. Psychology comes to give answers to all this uncertainty.
Therefore, according to modern psychology, the term behavior means all the conscious, unconscious, verbal, mental and kinetic expressions of ourselves. Psychology uses statistic researches so as to distinguish the normal behavior from the abnormal one. Such a thing is very difficult because every society has its own behavior standards, and, consequently, an act that is normal according to one society, may be abnormal according to another. For example, polygamy is not permitted in Europe, but it is permitted in certain societies in Africa. So, the judgement of a behavior must bear in mind the social environment in which it takes place .
The demand of learning is growing larger and larger because of the development of the economic. With the enlarging needs of learning, online learning appears to give not only students but also teachers a chance to perform better in learning. Online learning provides more free time and space to both two parties while traditional learning strictly demands both parties participate in the same time and at the same place. In other words, students can place more time to comprehend the theories or they can get other relevant course to comprehend the knowledge more comprehensive. Last but not least, online learning students can also get through the content over and over again as they missed during the lecture. You ever hear someone say they have swagger? A lot of times people's swagger is determined from their style. For example, everyone has a specific style of fashion. If you put on some cargo shorts with a tank top and slides you're probably not going to a job interview. Just like anything else, writing has different expressions. Writing is a form of communication; the person is writing to inform, persuade, describe, or tell a story. There are four main types of writing styles, expository, persuasive, descriptive, and narrative. We then choose what we want to read according to our interest in each category.

Its name might as well give it away. Think of a closing argument in a court case being presented to a jury. Each party's counsel is presenting a persuasive writing in the form of a speech. In this type of writing the writer uses choice words in a cohesive manner in order to "sway" or persuade the reader. You will most commonly come across this type of writing in advertisement. With that being said, persuasive writing is all around us. This type of communication may consist of the writer's opinions, but the best form also includes facts to back up his or her statements. With attempts to get consumers to purchase specific products, we see persuasive writings all around us in today's world.

Descriptive writing, often used to portray a vivid, detailed experience, person, place, or thing, is third of the writing styles. This style of writing requires strong observation skills to convey the writer's point of view. In personal stories, you tend to see a lot of descriptive writing because it's the writer's story. How to Make Fruit Smoothies Essay
Ever wish there were a delicious smoothie somewhere to buy at an inexpensive price? Well there is, and there is no need to go out! Read this section on how to make fruit smoothies and make a scrumptious smoothie.
To make a good smoothie, the materials needed are: about ¾ cup of juice, or milk, about 2 cups of fresh or frozen fruits, ½ of yogurt, and finally, 6 cubes of ice if the fruits aren't frozen. A blender that can crush ice well and that has a secure lid is also required. Unlike other recipes, a smoothie recipe doesn't have to use exact measurements. To make the smoothie healthier, include a scoop of whey or soy protein powder. For a sweet smoothie, use pineapple juice for the liquid. Something creamy? Try milk. Try using different flavored yogurts and combinations of fruits. Now that all the material is prepared, get cooking! Gather all the ingredients and put them in the blender. To make things easier, put the fruits first, and then the milk or the juice. The liquid will help the fruits melt a bit, making it easier to pure. Finally, add the yogurt. When all the ingredients are in the blender, turn it on, using the liquefy or puree setting. Depending on the blender, wait about 30 seconds and turn it off so that the fruits will be mixed up well with the liquid and the yogurt. Make sure to put the cap on the blender and watch out for the cutter! It hurts if you cut yourself on it.
When the ice cubes stop blending, turn off the blender and see if the smoothie is clear and if there are no chunks of fruits inside. Get a spoon and move it around in the blender to check. If the smoothie looks too thin add more fruits or ice and this should thicken it up. If it looks too thick, add more liquid in it. Adding yogurt or a banana will thicken the smoothie, but don't add both unless another watery fruit is used in the smoothie.
Once this step is finished, pour the cool concoction into a large glass. For maximum health benefit, drink the smoothie straight away. If there is too much, then freeze the smoothie. A frozen

I have been taking Expository Writing for 4 months. I have found that I need to be able to communicate myself in writing. I must relay exactly what I'm trying to put forth to others and convey the right message of understanding. I must be able to explain myself, negotiate, and work in teams. My language skills can be worked on and improved. I need to be able to pick up the language of whatever environment I'm in whether it be at work or school, or in society. Since everyone does not have the same background, learning how to write the written word is important in any environment. I have learned how to write and express myself, how to think for myself, and how to find answers to things I do not know. Most important I have learned how to believe in my writing.
I was very hesitant in taking this English class, I have not taken an English class in many years. When I took the placement test for reading and English, I tested out of all categories. I was proud of myself for that feat. When I found I was going to have to take a college level English class, I avoided it at all costs. Too much pressure. However, I have learned about the Rhetorical Essay was to understand how an author writes and not focus on what the content is. Knowing the explanation of what techniques and author uses to make their point come across to the intended audience. I learned about Argumentative Research Paper is to debate both sides of an issue. The intent is to be unbiased and state the facts on either side. I learned about Public Piece with Presentation is meant to deliver an effective presentation to engage your audience. Your audience listens to not only what you are saying but your visual engagement in the topic being presented. Also, the point of the class is to be able to work with others to achieve a desired outcome or task. To know that I can work with others in a cohesive environment to draw on everyone's input and views. This will assist me in the real work of life and assist in handling many types of people and myself in communicating.
I have never been a good writer; however, I have learned that communication is not the same when writing. Having a conversation about aliens

I feel that I have learned to understand learning more and to also understand the value of learning. As I get older I can comprehend subject matters more than I could ever do before. I feel that I have to get rid of bad habits in order to make room for better habits that I need for everyday life. I am learning better habits everyday. Even though I did bad on my first exam I feel that counted as learning for me because now I know what it takes for me to receive a high grade on any test I take.
The biggest learning experience to me so far is life itself. I feel that way because there is so much to learn in life. It takes growing up for me to learn in life. I am now beginning to understand the value of learning because a year ago I did not appreciate learning. I did not value it like I value it now. I took it for granted as if learning could just be given to me. I realize now that it has to be earned. My attitude in high school was bad because I really did not feel I was learning, so I took it for granted. In high school I felt as if the teachers were jokes and I also felt they did not care about educating me properly. I am now starting to learn the value of an education. I now look forward to learning new things everyday. I feel that I am beginning to have a passion for learning. I never thought that I would feel this way about learning because I never did appreciate it like I do now. I now actually yearn to learn; I feel that I need to learn new things. Every assignment I have done in college is teaching me something new. I think I feel this way because I am maturing and I now view learning differently than I did

During Labor Day weekend all of my family travels to South Jersey to my grandfathers' condo. We usually spend all of our time on the beach and barbequing, except on Sunday when we go to church. After all, my grandfather is a minister. One of our biggest family traditions is going back to Puerto Rico. Every year my mother and I travel back to Puerto Rico for a portion of our summer vacation. Now that I am older I travel there more often and stay there much longer. My father never joins because he doesn't like my mothers side of the father too much and he thinks that we when we speak Spanish we are all plotting against him. Of course that's not true though. My bother doesn't speak Spanish so he doesn't like to go either. I guess that tradition is one that belongs solely to my mother and I.
The role of the people in family basically stayed the same for most of the generations with a little change in the later generations. Earlier the males were the only ones that worked in the family and the wife stayed at home and took care of the house and
Technology in the Classroom Essay example
Technology in the Classroom
Technology is everywhere and used in every part of life. Practically every job uses some form of technology. It is important for students to learn how to use technology in order to function in this technology–based country. But it is also extremely important for students to learn using technology. Technology has the capability of opening all students eyes to a world of mathematics that they never before could have even began to imagine or understand.
The U.S Department of Education is developing a plan, The National Education
Technology Plan, to incorporate technology properly into the classroom. The goal of this plan is to improve student learning and to prepare students for the world we live in...show more content...
(NCTM).
Using technology in the classroom is a sensitive issue. It is the teacher?s responsibility to know when it is appropriate to use technology and when it is not. Students will not be able to learn and understand mathematics, if they never have a solid foundation to start from. For example, students may know how to graph an equation on a calculator and determine the zeros, but if they were never taught how to algebraically solve the equation or how to hand graph the equation, do they really understand and know how to solve an equation? It is the teacher?s role to give students the opportunity to learn a topic, and it is technology?s role to help students expand and deepen that knowledge.
Not all topics should be taught in the ?teaching first, then technology? format.
Sometimes it is necessary to use technology in the teaching process. Technology can enhance the teaching process, which in turn increases student learning. Teachers can use computers and projectors to help students visualize geometric shapes. Programs like The
Geometer?s Sketchpad allow students and teachers to manipulate shapes and see how different things (area, perimeter, angles, etc.) are effected. After students hand graph an equation, a teacher could project the graph onto the board in order for students to check their work. Technology can
