Argumentative Reflection
Argumentative Essay Reflection One of my central struggles throughout high school has been writing essays and reports for all classes not just english. I was a little worried when I signed up to take this course, since it counted as a college credit. Even though I was worried about taking this course, but I am thankful that I did. The main reason behind my decision to take this course is because I thought it would better prepare me for college. This argumentative essay was one of the hardest essay that I have written. I have never written in this style before this essay. Even though, I have never been the best writer, I have always got good grades. After receiving my first rough draft I knew this class was not going to be easy. The part...show more content...
One of the areas of my writing where I was struggling in using my voice. Granite, there were parts of my essay where I successfully integrated quotes within my voice, but for the most part that was my weakest area. For example of one of my better integrated quotes, in my third paragraph when I say, "Today, consumers rely on social media for everything, whether it is communicating with old friends, finding new friends, shopping, researching, and staying informed with the latest news. Daniel adds that, "'Americans who take part in political activities on social networking sites also tend to be highly active in other areas of political or civic life'" (29), which insinuates that people rely on social media more today than we have in the past". This was one of my better examples because I further explain and analyze the quote in my voice instead of just ending the sentence after the quote. One of my poor examples is, "Many people who suffer from depression care a lot about what others think about them. That is why many of those people tend to turn to social media as an outlet to express their feelings". I made a bold statement and did not back up what I said with my voice I just ended that sentence and moved on. Instead of moving on I should have explained it further and told them why people tend to turn to social media to express their feelings. One of the areas of my writing where I was
Argumentative Essay On Social Media Addiction
Social Media has become a plague in our world today, it's like a disease that is spread around very quickly, and super–fast. For example, some old family members of mine, who I would have never expected to use social media are now using it, and they have become very good at using it, their black belts of social media if you will. They heard young people talking about it, so it made them wonder "if teenagers are excited about this whole new trend might as well give it a shot, and see how well we do with it ourselves." But what they don't know is that social media is good for us for some good reason like keeping up with far relatives, keeping up with the news, and what's going around the world but once you start using it for other non–good...show more content...
Facebook jealousy is bad, for that it causes so many problems and arguments with your partner which in term can lead us to even consider cheating.
Cheating is another negative implication from using too much Facebook. By using Facebook in a unhealthy matter it increases the chance of someone cheating, it definitely increases the odds of a couple to cheat on each other, because Facebook has a private message feature allowing anybody to send a message where just the two people are the only ones that can read and see the messages. To some extent if the person doesn't want their partner to find out they're cheating, they will even create a fake profile to reach out to the person. A great example of this is one of my uncles actually cheated on his girlfriend using the same tactic I talked about. He used the private message feature which allowed him to keep his affair a secret from his girlfriend. While his girlfriend thought he was at work, he was actually cheating on another girl.
Low–self–esteem is another negative implication, that can happen to us for using Facebook for such a long time! By using Facebook too much our self–esteem will drop, because we'll always be thinking about what other's think about our profile, posts, updates, and also being concerned about having the perfect life, and getting likes. There are so many great examples of this, but one that always comes to mind is the tv–show Catfish. Mostly all of the time the person
Argumentative Essays
Failure is the step towards success. Do you agree?
It is often assumed that failure is a deterrent to achievement. Rather, failure should be seen as a motivator for a person to keep trying until the objective or aim of a particular mission is fulfilled. Failure often times leads a person to feel helpless, disappointed and depressed. However, one should not allow this to set them back in trying to achieve the ultimate aim one has set out to do. Failure in the beginning can often be a powerful incentive to reassess one's position in wanting to achieve the particular aims; to analyse whether the purpose is worth the trouble the person has to undergo and the whether the obstacles are surmountable. Another disadvantage of being an only is that he lacks companionship. He has no brother or sister to confide in. Growing up as an only child can be very lonely. If you have siblings you will have to share everything, so you get less; but you also get less of the bad things. Siblings can support and comfort each in times of trouble. The elder siblings learn to care for the younger ones and the younger ones learn to respect their elder siblings and have someone to look up to besides their parents. You are more balanced person than an only child. Another advantage of having siblings is that your parents' attention is divided among your siblings. As a result, there is less pressure on you to perform well, be it academically or in other areas. Having siblings also means that you have companionship, the joy of caring and sharing, and security. I, personally, am happy that I am not an only child.
Students should not take up part time jobs. Discuss.
Nowadays, students love to have part–time jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to gain experience from working. However, having a job is a big responsibility for a student. Before, teenagers at their age were working to help their family because of poverty. Nevertheless, they were actually eager to study and learn at school for their future. It was not the same as the teenagers nowadays where they are more likely competing to each other to have a job. Most of the
Argumentative Essay On Renewable Energy
Renewability
For nearly everyone on earth, fossil fuels are a part of our daily lives. Some of the more obvious places to find petroleum products would be gas and diesel in cars and trucks, but it is in more than just your tank. Without fossil fuels, we would not have things such as plastic to make a wide variety of things such as tires, kayaks, or even computers. The question remains, do we need fossil fuels?
In this day and age, we have new energy sources that could be used to power our homes and transportation. Wind and solar power are used all over the world, but are still used far less than fossil fuels. Most would say it's not reliable or it doesn't make any profit. While both statements are true, it doesn't mean we can't make a better future using renewable energy. In fact, the only reason we don't use renewables for everything is that we don't want to change. The hard truth is we need to change. Fossil fuels are great right now, but if we run out, humanity must have another source of energy.
Renewable energy may seem like a daunting task, but the benefits to humanity could be incredible. Public uses of renewable energy range from transportation all the way to heating and cooling. Everything we use could become less explosive and less expensive. Cities with a high concentration of people could become safer and healthier places to live. Transportation could be converted to electricity dramatically, improving smog conditions. Global warming may or may not
Argumentative Essay On Online Dating
Over the past decade, online dating popularity has increase drastically. Even though the younger generation of society is in the transition from traditional to modern dating, people of all ages are beginning to test the modern way of communicating: online dating. Many people are curious if online dating is the best way to search for a partner in today's society. Is online dating actually the most successful way to find "the one"? Many people do not feel comfortable admitting that they participate in online dating simple because they are unsure of how society will judge them. Society is gradually becoming aware of the idea and accepting the newest form of dating and courting. How successful is this modern dating and how does it compare to traditional dating techniques? The world is such an enormous place, making traditional dating difficult to meet the number of people which online dating sites provide (Nicholson, 2014). Individuals may access partners with specific interests that may include lifestyle, personality, and orientation (Nicholson, 2014). A variety of dating sites offer matching tests, which theoretically help connect two individuals quicker than if they searched with the traditional method (Nicholson, 2014). People realize how effortless it is to search for a partner and immediately fall in love with the process. Online dating provides the opportunity for individuals to gain more personal information about the person prior to meeting face to face (Nicholson,
Argumentative Essay On Sexual Abuse
Imagine being robbed of your innocence in a matter of seconds. Imagine not being able to speak out due to threats and fear of seeking help and not being taken seriously. Troubling, is it not? Sexual abuse has always been a problem in society that can affect anyone. Sexual abuse brings along many negative outcomes; however, throughout the years, sexual abuse has been a factor that has always been ignored. Even though sexual abuse has had many attempts to be avoided in various environments, all have failed. Many individuals tend to misinterpret sexual abuse and it's true delicacy. Although sexual abuse is often a violation against women, both genders can be victims. Victims can succumb to mental disorders, including PTSD and depression, which can initiate an unhealthy lifestyle to the point of triggering a contemplation of suicide. Nevertheless, sexual abuse has always been biased towards women relative to men for as long as we can remember. Considering the fact that sexual abuse can occur to both genders, it is mostly known to victimize women. One of the most common environments for sexual abuse to take place is in academic domains. In the view of society, men are above women; in consequence, women portray a weak image, hence making easier casualties of sexual abuse in the educational field. Due to the fact that students may need guidance to better excel in their career, some professors begin treating it as an opportunity to gain sexual access from the student. To better illustrate the idea that sexual abuse makes its way through into academic environments, take the word from the victims themselves. "I was naive enough to think that we would talk about Wittgenstein, but after he flopped over me a few times, telling me that I had to have sex with him... I made my escape" (Whitley 39). Moreover, another victim said "I couldn't say 'no' because he would have responded with rage and revenge. He would have ruined my career"(Whitley 39). In both cases, these women were attacked by the professors for being of lesser status; they were manipulated to remain silent by fear, threats, and their dependence on the professor for academic help. Due to the idea that women are viewed lesser than men, inflicts professors' to

Argumentative Essay On Vaccines
Childhood Vaccinations The number of individuals who are unvaccinated or infected in the United States has increased (Sun). Vaccines recommended for children are crucial and result in fewer health risks and greater healthy lifestyles. Proponents agree that vaccines are safe and effective, while opponents disagree and believe that vaccines create more negative outcomes than positive ("Should Any Vaccines..."). Opponents attempt to influence and persuade the majority of individuals to stray away from their viewpoints relating to the encouragement of vaccinating children. The rising percentage of children and parents who reject immunization and protest safe vaccines indicate less triumph for sufficient immunization for the population. There are many detrimental risks that affect unvaccinated children, and supporting childhood vaccinations profoundly benefits each parent and child. Vaccines are administered primarily to fabricate immunity against diseases like rubella, polio, whooping cough, diphtheria, and small pox ("Should Any Vaccines..."). Even though the majority of parents authorize their children to receive immunization, the minority of parents argue that the side effects and relations of these injections include seizures, paralysis, diabetes, and autism instead of immunity ("Should Any Vaccines..."). On August 27 2010 the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit put an end to these theories by stating that there is no significant relation between immunization and

Argumentative Essay On Organ Donation
The medical industry had been achieving more in the stage of medical advancements, though they are still in the early phase. Artificial organs have been one of those achievements. Although they have achieved such, artificial organs are not perfect. Most doctors as well as patients would prefer to replace a dying organ with a compatible human organ, rather than with an artificial or animal organ. Yet due to a there being less organs donated than recipients, artificial and animal organs are becoming more common in transplants. Most of this issue is because people are unaware of how organ donation works, the organs that can be donated, how many people are in need, and the advancements that have happened in the field. Organ donation saves hundreds of lives every year, but many lives are recklessly lost due to a shortage of organ donors.
Organ donation is the medical process of voluntarily giving one or more of your organs to someone in need, whether it be someone you know or a stranger. It is strictly voluntary, no payment for the organ/s will be given from the hospital, the recipient or the recipients family. In organ donation, there are two types of donations, living organ donation and deceased organ donation. Living organ donation is when the donor is still alive and voluntarily chooses to donate one or more of their organs to a recipient(s) in need. Whereas, deceased organ donation happens after the donor has passed away, and consent was given to be able to donate their organs.
In living organ donation, before a donor can donate there are tests administrated to see if the donor is suitable to donate. There is an evaluation of the donor done to make sure that no physical, psychological, or emotional harm will happen to them before, during, or after donating (Organdonor.gov U.S. Government Information on Organ Donation and Transplantation). In living organ donation, most donations happen within family members, or between close friends, although there are stranger donations that happen. Living organ donors should generally be physically fit, in good health, and between the ages of 18 to 60. They should not have a history or have diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure, kidney disease, or heart disease
Argumentative Essay On Stereotyping
Racial Stereotypes As a little girl, I was ashamed to be Indian. This was due to all the negative stereotypes surrounding my race. In my childhood, I heard people say Indians were smelly, stingy, and stuck up (alliteration). In fear of being teased and misjudged, I tried to be as "normal" as possible to make everyone forget that I was Indian (pathos). As I grew older, I learned to be proud of who I am, but disregarding stereotypes is still a challenge. I am sure everyone in this room has been affected by racial stereotypes before and believe me, I know what you are going through (ethos). You may think that only bigoted and prejudiced people used stereotypes, however, recent studies have shown that everyone categorizes people on a daily basis without even realizing it. Most people think stereotypes are just jokes, yet research proves that stereotypes have serious negative effects. People should stop stereotyping because stereotypes cause "stereotype threats", create social division, and lead to racism (parallelism). The first effect of stereotyping is a phenomenon known as "stereotype threat" that occurs in a situation where a person is in fear of unintentionally confirming a negative stereotype. Several studies have been conducted to discover the effects of stereotype threats. For example, I discovered that Toni Schmader, an assistant professor of the UA psychology department, and Michael Johns, a UA graduate (ethos), conducted studies that showed, "college women score lower on tests of mathematical ability, and Hispanic students might score lower on tests of intelligence, not because they have less ability, but because reminders of negative stereotypes temporarily decrease their 'working memory capacity' (UA News Services, "Exploring the Negative Consequences of Stereotyping", UANews.Arizona.edu)." This demonstrates that the students did not do worse on the test due to their lack of skills, but rather due to negative stereotypes. In a similar study by professors Claude Steele and Joshua Aronson, African American and White college students took the same intelligence test under two conditions. In the stereotype threat condition the students were told the test would evaluate their intelligence, and in the
Examples Of Argumentative Essay
Argumentative essay presents a point of view about something and explains the reasons in order to win readers' agreement. It is built around a specific statement (or main premise) that is debatable within the field in which students are studying. In other words, at the center of an argumentative essay is a statement with which readers may disagree. The argumentative essay will need to support that statement in a manner that convinces the readers of its truth. It mainly strives to convince the reader of the writer's point of view, using reasonable and ethical methods .The process of argument composition varies from writer to writer, most writers follow these three stages: forming an argument, which can consist of discovering a motive for writing and identifying an audience to address, discovering and sharpening a position, and developing an appropriate style; supporting the argument; and reviewing the argument, which can include considering the image projected by argument, making substantial additions or deletions to a first draft, and adding an introduction and conclusion (Cheng and Chen 2009, Day,1997, Liu,2005,Mayberry,2009)....show more content...

This one secret cost Romeo's and Juliet's lives. Second, this secret caused problems by taking Romeo's and Juliet's lives. Others may say, secrets must be kept because they can hurt people. In an article by Irene Van, says that you can keep secrets about family and friends. Irene Van says, " Gossip about family or friends unless this is about something that worries you, in / which case you should tell a adult you trust" (Van.II). This proves that, Irene Van believes that secrets about family and friends should be kept because it can really hurt your friends feelings. Second, this could be true because if I tell my friend one of my secrets, I trust this person. If he or she is going to go and tell my secret to someone, I am not going to tell he/she any secrets. However, on the other hand, in the same article Irene Van says that any kind of touch should not be kept as a secret. Irene Van says, " Secrets that are not safe to keep:/ Any kind of touch" (Van.II). First, I would tell my parents if this happens to me because if I tell this secret to my friends, and they spread it, it would hurt me. Second, this can lead to more problems if I kept this as a secret from my parents because, the same thing will continue if I don't take
The Great Gatsby Argumentative Essay
In the novel the Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, the observations of the character named Nick Carraway reflects upon the life of Jay Gatsby and his surroundings. Argumentative Essay On Climate Change
"There's one issue that will define the contours of this century more dramatically than any other, and that is the urgent threat of a changing climate." – Barack Obama. Climate change has been a popular topic of discussion, because of the threat to our environment. The world will forever be changed if climate change isn't taken into serious consideration and not in a good way. Climate change has been a popular topic of discussion, because of the threat to our environment. Climate change has had many negative effects, for example, damage to coral reefs, the increase of wildfires, and most importantly rising sea levels. The damage to our earth cannot always be undone nevertheless it can make some things disappear forever. Rising sea levels are caused by the melting of ice which is from the raising temperature in the atmosphere. When the ocean water rises land begins to disappear which puts not only the risk of land not being there, but the risk of the people living there. In the article "Global Warming Impacts" written by a group called, union of concerned scientist write "Global warming is now accelerating the rate of sea level rise, increasing flooding risks to low–lying communities...". The people that this will be affected are low–lying communities and one of those communities is the Marshall Islands. The Marshall Islands are located near the equator in the pacific ocean and close to being sea level. Since the temperature has been warming up so much, some parts of this island are being flooded. People there are concerned. Many of the locals aren't just concerned with their island vanishing, but with their island their culture. New York Times interviewed Linber Anej who has lived on Marshall Islands his whole life, went to a conference in Paris representing his island's concern of having to leave their homes saying "It does not make sense for us to go to Paris and come back with something that says, 'In a few years' time, your country is going to be underwater. We see the damage occurring now. We're trying to beat back the sea.". What basically is being told is that instead of trying to bring awareness to the Marshall Islands they are just giving them a solution of where they can go after they lose
Argumentative Essay On Climate Change
Climate change can be traced down to since the mid–1800s, when the industrial revolution first started taking place all around the world. Lives of human and animal species have been negatively affected since then, with events such as natural disasters, the melting of ice in polar regions, and change in weather and living conditions. Climate change in polar regions, in particular, has faced the most damage compared to any other region because of its location in regard to the sun. Climate change holds many different views and opinions about the effects, and even the existence itself, but evidence is clear and unmistakable in global ramifications and local impact in polar regions.
"...Climate change [is] the 'greatest hoax ever perpetrated on the American people'", skeptics like Senator Inhofe of Oklahoma like to say. Climate change is change in climate patterns due to an increase in carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases produced by certain human activity. According to the National Snow and Ice Data Center, data taken by satellite has shown that the Arctic cover has decreased by 30% over the past 30 years, and this change, which also include change in sea ice and permafrost, in artic weather and climate is caused by humans. Although numerous scientists have confirmed the legitimacy of climate change, there are different views on whether climate change is real or not. Government officials like Senator Jim Inhofe of Oklahoma or Senator Marco Rubio of Florida have explicitly stated that they do not believe climate change is neither real, nor caused by humans (Tom McCarthy, 2014). On the other hand, mainstream media and other media outlets, such as The Independent and The Economist, have reported their findings of climate change and its legitimacy. The Independent (Conner, S. 2011) reported that records of these changes were taken by military submarines, land measurements, and satellite data to prove ice in polar regions are melting faster and faster. Satellites have tracked sea ice since the 1970s and by nuclear submarines since the Cold War,
according to Peter Wadhams of Cambridge University and it was predicted that by September 2015, there would be no more sea ice. (Conner, S. 2011). Luckily, sea ice has not
Essay Domestic Violence Against Men
The first reaction upon hearing about the topic of battered men, for many people, is that of incredulity. Battered husbands are a topic for jokes (such as the cartoon image of a woman chasing her husband with a rolling–pin). One researcher noted that wives were the perpetrators in 73% of the depictions of domestic violence in newspaper comics (Saenger 1963).
Battered husbands have historically been either ignored or subjected to ridicule and abuse. In 18th–century France, a battered husband "was made to wear an outlandish outfit and ride backwards around the village on a donkey" (Steinmetz & Lucca 1988).
Even those of us who like to consider ourselves liberated and open–minded often have a difficult time even imagining that husband...show more content...
More recently, in a study of spousal homicide in the period from 1976 to 1985, it was found that there was an overall ratio of 1.3:1.0 of murdered wives to murdered husbands, and that "Black husbands were at greater risk of spouse homicide victimization than Black wives or White spouses of either sex" (Mercy & Saltzman 1989)]
The subject of husband–battering had finally been addressed, but not to the great satisfaction of anyone. Although it had finally been shown that there was violence being perpetrated both by wives and husbands, there was no information about relative frequency or severity, or who initiated the abuse and who was acting in self defense. Furthermore, some researchers became concerned that the use of police or social services references in choosing subjects to study might be biasing the results. In short, they recognized that battered husbands might be nearly invisible next to their female counterparts.
In 1976, for instance, in a critique of the Curtis report (which found women less likely to assault, but as likely to murder, as men), Wilt & Bannon wrote that "nonfatal violence committed by women against men is less likely to be reported to the police than is violence by men against women; thus, women assaulters who come to the attention of the police are likely to be those who have produced a fatal result."

Argumentative Essay On Memorials
Memorializing events in the history of the world for any purpose has it's positives as well as the negatives. Ranging from a memorial of a popular United States president from a loved one of a family, memorials have generally served as a purpose of remembrance from the past of said event. The purpose of the memorial is usually associated with a positive, uplifting feeling towards the deceased individual or past event. While this is more or less simply defining what memorials are for, what is the meaning behind them? What purpose do they serve besides the simplicity that they are? Important messages from a few varied sources will give a differing viewpoint on memorials from one to another. The first thought of memorials is the simple, generic...show more content...
Memorials are meant to be striking in the sense that you will notice said memorial and donate some attention to it. The views of these see this attention capturing as exceedingly high for some purposes. Some memorials are outstanding in their craftsmanship and aesthetics. This makes people wonder what could be lurking inside the memorial, or what is near that memorial. What we've got here is a formula, striking looks of the monument is almost guaranteed to attract some form of attention. According to Source G, the analogy of tainting the planet with specific memorials are ridiculous, "I imagined taking a knife and cutting into the earth, opening it up, an initial violence and pain that in time would heal. The grass would grow back, but the initial cut would remain a pure flat surface in the earth with a polished, mirrored surface, much like the surface on a geode when you cut it and polish the edge. The need for the names to be on the memorial would become the memorial; there was no need to embellish the design further. The people and their names would allow everyone to respond and remember. The ideals of such nonsensical placements of the memorials are just irritable at the
Argumentative Essay On Minimum Wage
Minimum wage
Minimum wage has caused controversy throughout history between the two parties in government, the Democrats and Republicans, debating if they should increase minimum wage or not. Minimum wage was first established during 1938 under President Franklin D. Roosevelt (Sessions). The first act to enforce employers to pay its employees is the Fair Labor Standards Act which followed the Social Security Act (Sessions). Minimum wage started as twenty–five (25) cents per hour which doesn't seem like a lot, but it was at that time (Sessions). The United States tended to raise the minimum wage when the standard of living changed. Since 1938, two other amendments were created to increase minimum wage laws even more. By 1961, minimum wage raised to $1.15 with another increase in 1963 (wages). Since the 1963 wage change, minimum wage created a trend of increasing yearly or every other year (Wages). From 2007 to 2009 minimum wage increased each year making the current minimum wage $7.25 (wages). Sine minimum wage has been established, Congress has increased minimum wage twenty–two times (22) (). Since minimum wage is supposed to change when the standard of living changes, then why hasn't the United States government changed it since 2009?
Minimum wages laws fluctuate throughout all fifty (50) states. The federal government has minimum wage set at $7.25. Although the government has the law in place, states and cities must right to increase the minimum wage, but they are not allowed to decrease the value below the federal law.
