Essay about networks
Improving Network Performance
Nowadays, it seems that everyone has a computer and is discovering that communication technologies are necessary. E–mail, Internet, and file transferring has become a part of the modern world. Networks allow people to connect their computers together and to share resources. They allow people to communicate and interact with each other. The days of the lone PC are diminishing.
At the same time, computers are getting faster than ever. The most powerful PC five years ago couldn't be sold for half of its original price today. This poses some problems to the consumer. New technologies can't be driven by older technology. As innovations continue to be invented, the computer of yesterday is fast outpaced by the...show more content...
Modems, a popular communications device, typically have throughput rates from 9600 baud (See Glossary) to 28800 baud. Modems use an RS232 or serial port connection.
One solution to this transmission speed is the parallel or Centronics port. This port transmits eight bits at a time instead of one with a serial port, which is how they got their names. Because it sends eight bits at a time, a parallel port can achieve transfer rates of up to 40,000 bits or 5000 characters a second (Seyer 64). Parallel ports are commonly used to connect to printers and external storage devices.
The main problem with modems and parallel ports is that only two computers can be connected at one time. Networks were invented to solve this. They allowed a group of computers to communicate and to share resources such as hard disk space and printers. Different types of networks have different throughput rates, but all are higher than either serial or parallel ports. The type of network used at Banks High School is an Ethernet network with software from Novell. This network has the capability of supporting transfer rates up to ten megabits per second (Bennett 1). Although this seems like a lot, remember that all of the computers on the network are using this connection at the same time and each computer has to share with every other computer. There are a few ways to speed up a slow Ethernet network, however. Splitting the responsibility from one server to many is one way, and using more than one
Microsoft Word Facilities Essay
Microsoft Word Facilities
Word is a program that provides the user with a comprehensive set of tools for modern word processing. It allows you to format special documents and tables, create form letters and graphical presentations, and to exchange data with other applications. It is an essential program for entering and managing most text documents.
There are many advantages of using word to complete many different tasks and these are as follows.
1. Microsoft Word is an excellent word processing package for manipulating text documents as it provides you with an automatic spell and grammar check plus a thesaurus. Therefore, when producing professional documents (e.g. letters) there...show more content...
If you need full database capabilities, create your tables in Microsoft Access. For a table that you can easily include in a PowerPoint presentation, use Word.
3. You can arrange text and graphics on a page by moving drawing objects, including text boxes, AutoShapes, Clip art, WordArt, pictures, and imported art in most cases. You can simply drag them to where you want them. However, you can also place drawing objects in a precise position, and you can "attach," or anchor, an object to a paragraph so that if you move the paragraph, the object automatically moves with it. You can wrap text around a drawing object of any size and shape. You can specify particular sides of the text box or graphic you want the text to wrap to and the distance between the text box or graphic and the text that surrounds it. You can layer text and graphics. For example, you can create a watermark that appears on the printed pages of a document.
4. You can set your page up accordingly to the way you want it to be laid out by using Page Set–up. This option allows you to alter the page in some way either by changing the margins, changing the orientation of the page from portrait to landscape or by changing the size of the paper. Also another feature of word is that you can add headers and footers to pages to give a clear identification of what the document is about. In the Page Set–up option it
Essay about The Power of Words
The Power of Words
Language has an irreplaceable role in our lives as mankind has grown to depend on it as an important way of acquiring Knowledge. But how valid is language as a way of knowing? French philosopher Jean–Paul Sartre answered this question with the quote: "Words are more treacherous and powerful than we think." Words do indeed lie. It is precisely because of its role as an indispensable tool of communication and thoughts that words have the power to mold our values, emotions and perception. We encounter large amounts of hidden implications and deceptions embedded in words on a daily basis, from the books we read to the news we hear. Language can be a powerful instrument of...show more content...
Thus the word "develop" reinforces society's goal to move in a positive direction. However its ubiquity can also create an illusion that "development" is a must (Rosenthal 77). Let's illustrate this with a personal example from the human sciences. A man began an affair and put his marriage at risk. After all the pain and tears, the couple reconciled and only remembered the good. While they tore each other apart during the affair, saying that they've "developed so much" from the affair suddenly put the experience into a positive light. Such positive terms are frequently employed in our society to justify our actions. Thus we should be careful where words lead us.
Furthermore, because our understanding of the world is, as Sapir puts it, "to a large extent unconsciously built up on the language habits of the group", it's easy to commit the misconception that we are interacting directly with reality as opposed to a world of words describing reality. In human sciences, this excessive trust in the validity of language and the direct linkage between thoughts and words result in possible "brainwashing" if certain words occur at an extremely high frequency in a person's daily interaction (Rosenthal 168). Failure to reflect upon the origins and implications of these words lead to subliminal acceptance of ideologies embedded in the language. Such cases of ignorance about words are ubiquitous

What Is My Favorite Word Essay
"Different"
I have a few words that I like and live by , but my favorite word is "different". It takes a lot to be yourself in a world that is constantly changing. I love to see people who aren't afraid of being themselves! The ones who would rather lead the pack than follow. I think that God created us equally, but with our own unique touch.
In this world, everyone comes from different cultures and backgrounds. The world is one big melting pot full of unique individuals. If we all were the same life would be so boring and serve us no purpose. When you first meet someone, what is the first thing you notice about them? Is it the way they speak, dress, or act? I notice the way they think, just by the way they...show more content...
It says " The one who follows the crowd will usually go no further than the crowd. Those who walk alone are likely to find themselves in places no one has ever been before." It has been linked back to different people , the message is clear as day. It is a powerful quote that I think everyone should read and live by. It's basically saying if you do not follow your own path it may cost you. It may not be the path that was meant for you. If you take a leap of faith and use your own imagination you can go beyond your limits. The truth of it all is anyone can be different. Even identical twins are different in some way. You will noticed the different personalities immediately. The world need more strong, positive leaders . We were all put on this earth for a reason and we can all make a difference and be DIFFERENT.
My goal is to be an elementary teacher. My ultimate goal is to be able to make a difference with one class at a time. I hope that when I finally get my own classroom, I am blessed enough to teach my little babies a lot of good values to have inside and out of the classroom. I will make sure they are comfortable and eager to show me their creativity. Different means having confidence in who you are. Do not lose your identity because you want to fit in. You are who you are for a
My Favorite Words
I remember countless little episodes in my life where if my sister said a certain word to me, I would be on the floor laughing within seconds. It seemed almost as if when we got older, we started becoming more clever in choosing the words that would bring us to the point where we were peeing our pants. From preschool to the end of elementary school my sister and I would always find something, be it a phrase, word, or just a very strange idea that made us giggle until our mom started laughing at the mere sight of us rolling on the floor in tears. These words cycled at a rate of a new word about every month.
One of the first words evoking laughter was "pickle". It was a simple word, but at that point it was enough to make us giggle. Don't ask me why, but five–year–old me got a kick out of the word. I would get off the bus from a long, three hours of half day kindergarten at Evamere Elementary School, my Pokémon cards in hand, and as always, saw my sister waiting for me as I approached the house through the garage. She had long bangs going down to her eyes which she refused to cut, and she had her stuffed animal dog on a leash in tow behind her, its dirty body dragging through God knows what on the kitchen floor. She was the classic toddler. She saw me and her eyes lit up because she knew that just one word uttered from the day before would make me laugh hysterically. I knew what she was thinking. I knew what she was going to say, but it didn't matter because when I heard her
My Writing Essay
My Writing
In the past four years, I have written many papers for various classes, enjoying some and others having to choke out words to write down. In this memo I will describe my writing projects and how they made me become a better writer, and how they will continue to help develop me into a becoming a more prosperous writer.
What I Really Learned in English 100
Well as a recent pupil of the Great McFadden I want to do all that I can to be on his good side, for he said that if I go one mile to meet him, he will go two miles to meet me, which seems more that fair. As an assignment I am told that I have to write what I learned in English 100 and how that it prepared me for English 200. Well since honesty is the best way of...show more content...
Having taken many writing classes I have learned many things about writing. I enjoy writing and can often write many pages about things that I am interested in. I know that I have more learning to do about writing, and hopefully in the next couple weeks my knowledge of writing will have expanded and my writing will have improved.
My Experience With Writing Arguments
I am unaware of any writing arguments. The only thing I can really think of is writing a research paper with the intent to change people's minds on a certain subject. I remember researching for weeks in the library, looking through magazine after magazine. I had searched for enough information to write a ten–page paper. The writing process of the paper took several weeks but when I had finished, all the hard work was worth the effort. I learned many things from that course such as that you need to search for all the information you can because it is better to have too much information than not enough. Also that course taught me many things about making references to the authors of the articles I used for my paper. I remember writing out note card after note card and keeping all the necessary information about each book or magazine. That course taught me to become a better writer and to respect how much detail really goes into a research paper like I had written. Other than that, I have not really had much experience in
The Importance of Integrity Essay
Integrity is how somebody lives their life. In this life we live, we face choices every day that only we can answer. We dictate how we run our own lives, and they way we run them defines us. Integrity is doing the right thing versus the wrong thing. People, if nothing else, can always have their pride, their integrity. It is something that means a lot to some people and then nothing to others. The ones who value their integrity highly are the good people in this world, and the opposite is true for those who do not value their integrity.
Integrity has been defined as "Moral soundness; honesty; freedom from corrupting influence or motive" by a good friend of mine and college graduate. The dictionary describes it as "Unimpaired,...show more content...
If we're all forced to comply, we would have a much safer world. Nobody forces us to do anything, and that is the point. Our personal integrity can only be formed by one person: ourselves. Nobody can control out integrity. They can try to sway it (and they do almost daily), but they can not change it unless we allow it to be changed.
Integrity is absolutely vital to a community. If a community as a whole, coherent, machine does not have morals, it will be a very bad community. The people in it will not flourish, the kids will grow up bad, and it will be a continuous cycle of immorality. Is a community has no integrity, it brings down the whole area around it. We tend to define this as "the bad part of town."
Integrity is very important on a college campus. College is a synonym for the word "freedom." You live on your own, and the only people you answer to is the school or the police. So it is up to you to make the decisions that are right for your life. Because even more so in college, where you live with your friends, are there choices to be made every single day. And they all could effect your life.
Without integrity on a college campus, you have anarchy, because there are very few consequences in most situations. If there is a huge party and somebody decides he wants to do something bad, usually it is impossible to tell who did it because it is a party and there are usually a lot of things going on. Obviously, one of the biggest
The Meanings Of A Word By Gloria Naylor
The essay "The Meanings of a Word" by Gloria Naylor discusses the many definitions of a word and how its meaning can change according to context and delivery. She made this point by telling a story of her childhood and the first time she heard the n–word used by a white person in a derogatory, demeaning way. She described her this situation that took place when she was in third–grade and a boy in front of her in math class called her the n–word. She had no idea what it meant to be called that in a negative way because the people she grew up around only used it as positive and empowering. At the end of her essay, she once again emphasized how easy it is to change a word into something hateful simply depending on who says it and their...show more content...
But [she] didn't 'hear' it until it was said by a small pair of lips that had already learned it could be a way to humiliate [her]" (Naylor, 411). This not only supports the fact that the boy had been taught or heard this word by someone older like a parent, but it is also sad that a nine–year–old had to be taught that such a nasty, ugly word was created to make her and people like her feel ashamed and embarrassed to be black, or that are worth less as human beings, which is absolutely false. That is why slurs are created though, to make groups of people feel less "human". This essay explored the most infamous slur against the black community. The fact that slurs like this are prevalent in today's society is extremely upsetting and wrong. There are plenty of racial slurs that are so casually used today, it makes one's stomach ache in distress. Ableist slurs are even less reprimanded, a high school student walking through the hall will hear the r–word too many times to count during the course of a day. Just as commonly used are homophobic and anti–LGBT slurs. A high school student will hear the f–slur and the q–slur plenty of times, and even more will "that's so gay" or "you're so gay" be whipped from the mouth of students without a second thought. It's disheartening.
A sensitive, controversial topic today regarding slurs is the conversation of "reclaiming slurs". This idea
How Many Hours Per Week Essay
How many hours per week will you work after MBA?
Robert Frost said that by working faithfully eight hours a day, you may eventually get to be the boss and work 12 hours a day. New business graduates don't have to wait very long before they can get to do long, hard hours. They can do so right at the start of their careers. A few weeks into their jobs, fresh MBAs get to eat, sleep, and pray at their desks.
Poets & Quants reports a survey by TransparentMBA, a startup founded by Chicago Booth students, which gathered data from 700 MBAs from 80 b–schools worldwide to give us interesting facts about work hours, salary, and lifestyle of fresh b–school graduates. The survey results show that a majority of them go well beyond the traditional workweek of 40 hours, putting their work–life balance to some serious risk.
But people go to b–schools because they want to do "great things," earn great salaries, and achieve positions and prestige, not because they want keep their evenings free for family and friends. Indeed, most of them, or many, achieve their career objectives. So let's talk about hours and wages, first. We can come to work–life balance later.
Obviously, some sectors and companies are better than others when it comes to hours and wages. In fact, hours and wages vary widely from sector to sector, and among companies. TransparentMBA's survey provides clues to students and fresh b–school graduates about where their best deal might be in terms of average hours required,

Professional Writing Essay
"To write is human, to write well is divine" (Anonymous, 2010). So, why is it important to write professionally and what constitutes professional writing? Contrary to popular belief, professional writing is not merely being paid to write; although, professional writers are paid well. In short, professional writing is writing at the next level with a purpose. It is important to show the basic aspects of professional writing (knowing the audience, knowing the purpose, being persuasive, and getting to the point) so that one is able to accomplish the act of communicating effectively and looking professional in doing so.
Let's not confuse professional writing (business writing) with recreational writing (creative writing). When one...show more content...
Writing the message with the audience in mind will not only help shape the style of the message itself but the tone in which it is presented as well as the formality of the language used. Tone is the main tool used to effectively and efficiently sell the message and its purpose. Advanced word usage (conversational yet professional, positive, courteous, inclusive and familiar to the reader) is important in writing. Use of active or passive voice, emphasis through style, coherent sentence structure, coherent paragraph structure and placement of the main idea within the message are all used to set the tone and shape the readers frame of mind. Tone also dictates the clarity in which the message is delivered. The most important thing is to format the document and design the content of your message with the reader in mind so that they will understand the message clearly and quickly as well as accept the message readily.
Professional writing is not industry specific or medium specific. For that matter it is not just for professionals or professional purposes. It is not just for writing a novel or a business letter or inter–office memo. It can be used for direct messages that require action, making requests, delivery of bad news, giving instruction, reports or proposals, marketing, school research projects, goodwill messages, or something as informal as sending an email to a family member. Is the address correct? Does the subject line summarize the idea of the

Spring Break is that time of year when you just let loose and have fun. You can do activities like camping and swimming.
Many people like to go camping during Spring Break to enjoy nature;however, others go for the experience or family time together. Camping is a way for you to let go and just be one with nature.Even though nature may not be one with you. When camping the fast–paced world slows down and you can really relax and focus on other things.
Another activity to do is to go swimming. Swimming helps you cool down and relax. But you have options o to where you want to swim. You could go to the beach and get sand in your shoes and a breeze through your hair, or stay at home and chill in your backyard. But your possibilities are endless.

Bad Words Essay
In society there are things you can do, things you can't do, things you're supposed to do and things you're not supposed to do. I think that when people talk about these four concepts, they set confused with the words they use because there are also things your supposed to do, but can't do, and there are things you can do, but not supposed to do. This is where a lot of people make mistakes when they are talking because they can tell someone that they are not supposed to do something, or say, "Hey you can't do that'' but in reality they might be able to. An example of this is cheating. All of your teachers tell you to be honest and work hard for your grade but some students just let one person do it and let eight other people copy. And if we get punished for it, the how is it free speech? Think about it.
I don't really see any problem with swearing. I see it as words that will help others understand what you are trying to say. One way to see it is as a very passionate remark about something. When someone speaks about something that they really care about they can use a swear word that would emphasize their point effectively. Another part where it is very helpful is filling in other words that you might not think of on the spot. A swear word is really useful here because it can fill in for nouns, verbs, adjectives, pronouns
almost anything. And what makes a swear word a swear word? All they are nicknames for actions or objects. So does that make all nicknames swear words? Or others say that it is degrading or hurts others feelings. If this is true, then shouldn't there be a lot more swear words like loser or stupid? Think about it.
Now on the other side of this, yes I do think there should be limits on certain aspects in life to keep order in the world, but not on swearing. There are a lot bigger issues that society should be more concerned about. But then again

Even being an average person can be very difficult. If you look at a large amount of people in this world, they are average or below average in most things they do. No one can be good at everything, so don't ever think you have to be. Feeling pressured to be great at everything is one thing no one should ever have to go through. All it seems to do is tear down people's' self esteem creating more reserved and quiet people. Life is hard, and if it were meant to be easy, everyone would be good at everything and the majority of things would be meaningless. So, what would be the point of living a meaningless life? Take every situation in life and live it with the intention that it will be the

Words are very powerful things, they are not simply just letters written on a sheet of paper; they can inspire, motivate, and evoke certain emotions. To "carry the fire" was the boys main concern and those words meant a world of difference (McCarthy np). It gave the man and his son the strength and encouragement to just keep going. Khaled Hossieni's novel The Kite Runner used the repetition of the saying "for you a thousand times over" to induce an overwhelming response in the reader's emotions through the use of irony (Hosseini np). The huge power of words in literature, speeches, songs, and sermons are seen over and over again. The use of such powerful words can evoke emotions, motivations, and encouragement to the listeners because they are not just characters put together...there is emotion behind each single word. Cain and Abel is a story found from within the Bible about two brothers who are to give god a sacrifice to show how sorry they were for their sins. Cain the older brother is a farmer and decides to burn up some of his leftover hay while his brother, Abel, who tended after the sheep, picked the biggest and best one to sacrifice. When Abel's burned brighter Cain knew that God had rejected his gift and became livid with his brother ("The Story..." 1). Cain struck him and killed him, when God found this out he exiled him to the lands east of Eden and uttered "Timshel." This story is similar to the one of Charles and Adam Trask and almost repeats itself again with Cal and Aron. All three of these stories are filled with sin and manipulation, finally turning into guilt and redemption. What
