Hiking Essay
Hiking is a physical activity that anyone can do, at any age,and in most cases can be done next to your home and you don't have to travel far. It may seem like a very simple activity, however there is a science behind it: There are biomechanical principles and physiological principles involved. Biomechanical principles are the muscular activities required for the activity you're doing. Physiological principles are the bodies functions during the activity. In the following paragraphs, I will describe additional principles involved with hiking.
The first principle is the Individual Response Principle which involves genetics, your age, your body type, your diet, nutrition and your motivation towards completing an activity. Everyone's...show more content...

The third principle is the Overload Principle which is the level you would have to workout to reach your level of heart rate or beyond. According to a website on sports training, "The Overload Principle is a basic sports fitness training concept. It means that in order to improve, athletes must continually work harder as they their bodies adjust to existing workouts." www.sports–training–adviser.com/overloadprinciple.html. In the activity of hiking, the overload principle would include the hiker increasing the distance of the hike, alternating the terrain between flat and incline and also the speed of the hike. If the hiker does this on a consistent basis they will improve their fitness level.
The fourth principle is the Progression Principle which involves how long you have to workout before you reach your next target range. The progression principle is another basic training principle that goes with the overload principle. It "is the way in which an individual should increase the load." www.ode.state.or.us/teachlearn/subjects/pe/curriculum/fittprinciple.pdf. For a hiker, changing the duration of the hike from 30 minutes to 60 minutes, or changing the elevation of the hike from flat to incline or mixed incline would be examples of using the progression principle. As the hiker increases the difficulty of the hikes and improves their fitness level, their confidence level increases
Descriptive Essay About Hiking
Trails of exhaust were propelled out of every single car in the bumper to bumper traffic, making the recirculation button a necessity. The dull roar of hundreds of people walking, talking, shouting, and blaring their car horns gradually blended into one unpleasant, continuous track that I was forced to listen to. Litter and cigarette butts pooled around gutters and lined the curbs, so I redirected my gaze upwards at the towering skyscrapers. I liked the view, so long as I kept my eyes above street level, and I supposed I liked the city, so long as I did not breathe in too deeply. I tried to appreciate nicer aspects of the busy city, but where I really wanted to be, was hiking somewhere in the mountains. Although it may seem illogical, my love for hiking started before I could even walk. When I was still quite young, I remember being put into a child carrier on my dad's back, my head bobbing in rhythm to his steps. I am told that sitting in that backpack is the quietest I had ever been, as I was enraptured by the passing trees give way to the sunny slopes of the alpine. Upon learning how to walk, I began to pester my parents to free me from the prison that was the child carrier, and ever since then, hiking has become one of my favorite hobbies. Hiking gives me a sense of accomplishment and provides me with a place that I can find peace from the literal and metaphorical noise in my life. My parents have fostered my love for hiking and nature, by bringing me on vacation every year to hike for at least two weeks. In the Austrian Alps, tall and jagged cliffs rise out of the ground, towering over bustling towns lying on the valley floor. In Iceland, the rhyolite mountains are colored shades of red, golden yellow, and pink, and nestled between the mountains are large, sweeping, raven–black lava fields. The impressive mountains in Utah are accompanied by a lush canopy of greenery that slowly peters out as the mountains grow in height. In the spring and summer, the greenery is widespread and the skies are blue. Come fall, the mountains seem to be lit up with the magical colors of burnt sienna, fiery orange, crimson red, and bright yellow. In the winter, the skies are stormy grey, the mountains covered in a thick

Personal Narrative- Mountain Hike Essay
Personal Narrative– Mountain Hike
In hiking, as in life, there are choices between success and pain, pride and safety; this is the story of one such choice. Last summer I participated in the Rayado program at Philmont Scout Ranch. The eighth day of the trek was my crew's greatest challenge: Super Black Death, a hike of seven peaks in one day.
By 4 PM we had conquered most of the peaks. As we were climbing what we thought was our sixth peak, Big Red, a storm struck. It was a cold driving rain that froze us as we struggled up the mountain. We reached the top jubilant, but exhausted. As the crew tried to get a bearing I came to the slow realization that we were not on Big Red, but another peak. We had two peaks to climb, and in...show more content...
At the peak, our guides gave our weary group two choices: head downhill and camp, or press on and finish Super Black in one day. It was a choice between safety and pride.
Physically I was drained, but emotionally I was psyched. I had set a goal to do something that I had never thought I could. I started the hike with little confidence, and had been sure that I would need to be hauled off the trail. Yet here I was, with only one peak left to go. I chose pride.
The hike lasted for another four hours. It stopped raining as approached our last peak, though, and the most beautiful sky broke, filled with more stars than I had ever seen. I began to experience a natural high and felt like I could go forever. On experiencing this scene I knew I had made the right choice.
After that hike, I have never again believed there was anything I could not do. Like the hike, it might take a little pain, but just as I was rewarded with the pride of having accomplished Super Black Death, the accomplishment will override the pain.
I have also learned that one cannot always play it safe. Since the hike, I have been more willing to take risks. The decision made on top of Big Red not to go to the safety of the downhill camp was symbolic of a larger transformation. I was becoming a greater risk taker, realizing that it is sometimes better to disregard safety, and to seize the opportunity. In this case, that opportunity was to hike all seven
Backpacking: A Different Way Of Camping Essay
Backpacking: A Different Way of Camping
What is camping? To most people, it is perceived as a time to pack up the car, drive to local camp grounds, and spend the weekend in the great outdoors. It is a time to frolic with family and friends around a campfire, singing songs, playing games, and roasting marshmallows while listening to ghost stories that can only be heard while camping. However, to the avid backpacker, camping takes on a different perspective. While experiencing the great outdoors is very similar to car camping, backpacking is very different in many respects.
Preparation for backpacking and car camping and the locales where one can set up camp are very different. In either case, experiencing the great outdoors and

The average weight of a full backpack is about thirty– five pounds. A camper is completely dependent on what is in his or her backpack to survive in nature. Reaching one's final destination for car camping and backpacking are also very different. To get to the campsite while car camping, one follows a road map to the park, drives to the ranger station, picks up a pass, and pulls in to the campsite. Depending on the size of the park, there are usually fifty to one hundred campsites filled with weekend warriors. While backpacking, reaching the campsite is a greater task. First, the backpacker enters the park, gets a pass from the ranger station, and drives to the trailhead. At the trailhead one loads his or her gear in the backpack and firmly attaches it to their waist and back. Finally, the backpackers hikes two to twelve miles to reach their destination, following a topographical map and utilizing a compass. If one is fortunate, there will be someone camping at the same site. Backpacking is usually done by oneself or in a group. Going to the restroom is also very different in both cases. For one, there are no portable restrooms while backpacking. A shovel and toilet paper are a backpacker's only means. One picks a spot, digs a hole, and squats. It is a very peaceful experience with the birds chirping, the wind blowing, and trees swaying. While car camping, there is usually a communal restroom that almost always smells of disinfectants or deodorants. Car camping and

When we had everything we needed for hiking equipment (the backpacks, sleeping bags, lunch bags, bug spray, ponchos, extra food items, and bottled water) from home we went to Maine, spent a few days at grandma's then went to the mountains. Sadly my family left grandma's house early in the morning and we went hiking. By the time we parked a good chunk of the day had gone by. We took all the hiking equipment and put them on. The soft yet solid hiking boots were tied like any normal shoe but were extra laced because the boot went a little past the ankle. When all was said and done we started our journey up the mountain. The place of where we started was at a entrance followed by a leafed over path. The beautiful yellow grass was spread out covering the start of the mountain as if mother nature was declaring the land to be hers. From the little open field we made our way into a forest with our wooden hiking sticks in hand. As we walked the path a *squish* could be heard as our feet hit the mud. We didn't pay the mud much mind as we had decided that the owl on a nearby rock was more interesting. Someone got out the camera and we took a picture of the towering rock with the owl in its nest. When we were done looking we made our way up the path with determination to see more wildlife. As we continued on the path the number of rocks increased as did the steepness of the path and the trees. There came to be so many trees that the leafs blocked the sky and we were bathed in the

A.1. Internal frame packs have the frame on the inside of the backpack to allow the backpack to sit closer to the body and moves with the body to help navigate difficult terrain. This type also mitigates the chance of becoming off balance.
A.2. External frame packs support the weight away from the body, which helps in the ease of loading gear and allows sweat to evaporate from your body. This type can increase the chance of becoming off balance due to the weight not being close to the body.

A Camping Trip Gone Wrong
You would think that camping is fun and adventurous. Well, that is what I thought until I actually experienced it. My father told me we would be staying in a large tent overlooking the ocean. I envisioned being inside the tent with all this space and then looking out at the big blue ocean calmly flowing, as the sunset turns into bright bursting colors of yellow and orange. Little did I know about all the bugs that would end up biting every inch of our bodies, picking at our skin like little blood sucking creatures. My dad never mentioned them either. There's a lot he didn't mention. It was definitely not the fun–filled experience I anticipated. It was my first camping trip with my dad, his family, and my sister. We enjoyed this so much that it compensated for the dreadful morning we had. Our last day wasn't too bad. It was much more relaxing and the weather felt a bit cooler. We were finally able to go fishing. The ocean was crystal clear and as smooth as a plate, which made the fishing a perfect experience. So we casted our lines into the ocean making a beautiful ripple effect. We ended the day watching the sun turn bright orange as it was swallowed by the water against a hazy, smoky–grey sky. The clouds meshed into the sky as night came and sparkling, bright stars appeared and glistened like diamonds. Just as everything was going perfect, it came time for us to pack up and head home. In the end, I enjoyed spending time with my dad, his family and my sister, although it was definitely not a trip I would like to relive. At least now we all know how to better prepare for our next camping

Being in tune with the hiking community will help you to find trails and destinations that you normally would not be able to find on your own. This can make for many rewarding experiences. Get to know fellow hikers and ask them what their favorite hikes are. Try to pair with hikers that are around your experience level, and can offer you advice on locations and general hiking information if you require it.
The most crucial piece of the hiking experience is planning. Planning is key to a successful hiking trip, and can completely change how you view your experience. Before any hiking trip, you should always make a check list of the items that you will require.

One of the biggest mistakes that many new hikers make is hiking unprepared. Too many new hikers will check the weather report, throw on some boots with a backpack full of water and hit the trail. While it may be the easiest and quickest way to hit the trail, you want to make sure that you are prepared for the most dire situations, even on the shortest of hikes. There are a few things that every hiker should carry with them; a trustworthy pair of hiking boots (and maybe even some extra footwear), a backpack, a season–appropriate coat, sleeping bags, some form of shelter and a cooking device.

Descriptive Essay On A Trip To The Mountains
I have known a place tucked away in the Blue Ridge mountains for a majority of my life. My family and I take an hour and a half long drive up to the mountains almost every weekend. Although the drive is always tiring, the final destination is always worth the trip. Personally, my family calls this place a second home. As a result of the cabin, my appreciation for nature grew and I started to learn the path to gaining a more peaceful, enjoyable approach to life. Up in these mountains is a cabin: a sanctuary built for relaxation. As I approach the cabin, I'm immediately greeted by a gentle breeze that makes my cheeks redden and my smile grow. The breeze continues to blow and the trees sway slightly to produce a song created from the swaying of the Evergreen trees that rub against each other, and the leaves sliding across the dry ground. On lucky days , the bellowing whistle of the train blows greets us and combines with the sound of the wind to create the music of fall in the mountains. Stopping in my tracks, I look around in awe to see all of the colors under the sun mixing together in the trees to form the perfect mixture of bright yellows, wine colored reds, golden browns, pale greens, and dull or extravagant oranges. Ordinarily, a slight mist will ascend from the river and form at the top of the mountain, giving it a mystical appearance that came right out of a book. This mist slowly fogs my glasses as the cold air meets my flushed skin; however, I don't remove my
Hiking Process Analysis
There are several important factors that come into play while you decide about buying the perfect hiking gear for your specific needs. You need to consider whether it'll be a short duration hiking trip or a longer, well–organized hiking trip involving sleeping and outdoor eating, already taken care of by the organizers. Your purchase of the hiking gear will greatly depend on such factors and in case the trip is not organized by an external organization, you might have plenty of work on your hand.
To start with the process of identifying all the items that you'll require for the hiking trip, it is important that you get your hiking partner (if any) involved in the planning process. You'll have to determine whether it'll be two people in one tent or two people in two tents. Tents are normally available four to five pounds in weight and are the ideal choice for cold and rainy terrains.
Sleeping bag is the other thing in your hiking gear whose purchase will need some brainstorming. The ideal choice of a sleeping bag is dependent on the climatic conditions of the place that you plan to go on hiking. Generally, sleeping bags are available in weights of two ounces to one pound, packable into a size of a softball. You may either go with a very light weight sleeping bag for warmer climates or some sophisticated variety of cold–resistant sleeping bags that are capable to keep you warm even in minus thirty degree temperatures.
