CONFLICTS AND DISPUTES ARE INEVITABLE
Conflict is defined as the behaviour due to which people differ in their feelings, thought and/or actions. Collins (1995) states that the conflict is a 'serious disagreement and argument about something important' and also as 'a serious difference between two or more beliefs, ideas or interests' (cf. Kumaraswamy, 1997, p. 96). In general it is believed that conflicts are the underlying cause of disputes. In other words, dispute is a manifestation of the deep rooted conflict. A dispute is defined as 'a class or kind of conflict, which manifests itself in distinct, justifiable issues. So, it is said that a conflict can exist without a dispute but a dispute cannot exist without a conflict (Spangler and Burgess, 2003).
Many authors have highlighted the inevitability of conflicts on the other hand it is said that disputes can be prevented or at least can be minimized through proper management. Conflicts are ubiquitous where ever a large number of people are involved i.e. where the human relationships proliferate (Kumaraswamy, 1997). People are the principle resource for any commercial project today. Different project managers, engineers, surveyors belonging to different organizations and having different needs, goals and each of them looking to maximize their benefits are brought together to form a team. Because of these differences in the individuals the conflicts and disputes become inevitable in a project. Conflicts are generally perceived as a negative term but it has both positive and negative sides. 3.1 – Factors Effecting Timing & Environment For Communication
Care should be taken in communicating with other in the workplace. Factors such as anger and stress could be dangerous when communicating, as people are often very temperamental when affected by these factors. Another factor could be the environment, such as a meeting, could hinder communication as reputations and even jobs could be at stake if in appropriate communication is used. Basically, there is a time and a place for all various types of communication and care should be taken when talking to our peers and our bosses.
3.2 – Effective Non–Verbal and Verbal Communication
Body Language – This is important as people usually take note of how a person acts and moves. For example, if a person sometimes scratches their nose when speaking, it could mean to other people that he is trying to cover something up.
Questioning – Never be afraid to question a person for the sake of your own better understanding of a subject. It is different when questioning a person's ability or understanding of a subject, which could result in conflict.

Most companies today are team based at least to some extent. Whether a management team or some type of project team, there are teams almost everywhere one goes. Typically, they provide some type of training for conflict resolution so that team members can handle those situations where conflict comes up and allows them to deal with it within the team if possible. Ignoring conflict in any situation does not make the issue go away; in fact, in most cases it makes things worse and can ultimately destroy a team or a relationship and keep them from reaching the goal. Ignoring conflict is not managing it and should only be done there is no way to resolve the issue without some outside help. For example, if you are at work and walk by someone's desk and accidently knock their pen on the floor. All of sudden, the person lashes out and starts to curse at you. Knowing that this is not the norm for your coworker, it would safe to assume that they are under some form of stress or have other things on their mind. For this paper, I chose conflict because it is present in nearly every aspect of life, it is unavoidable, and knowing how to handle it is a valuable tool which I would like to investigate. The idea of conflict under this view brings to mind chaos, heated emotion, and high stress. The traditional mindset requires taking all necessary steps to prevent and remove the source of the conflict that may be detrimental to the team. Conflict is easy to understand, but defining it is difficult. If that individual succeeds in doing this, it can or will cause resentment and future arguments or will lead to someone else getting the blame. In order to deal with this issue is to walk away giving that individual with emotional difficulties some breathing space and then return later to talk to them about how to resolve their issue.
Knowing what Important– it is very common in the workplace that the smallest of issues can grow to large disputes. It is important to acknowledge that minor issues will take place now and again and that they should stay at a minor level.
Resolving Disputes– It is difficult to see how an organisation can learn without such problems and difficulties, therefore these problems are some like opportunities to deepen the understanding and to adapt plans suitable to all employees. If issues are going to become large disputes in the workplace it is important that they become resolved as soon as possible to prevent heavy tension between co–workers. There's going to be conflicts in every environment especially in the workplace where most people spend the greater part of the day. Leaders have different ways of leading their teams, and employees have to deal with different leaders throughout any given day. Employees can become confused and irritated with the variation of leaders and how they lead. My cultural upbringing and personality did not allow me question authority, that was until I moved further along in my professional career and I must admit some of the culture of the United States has rubbed off on me. My example, involves the culture of the current organization I am with and the lack of strong leadership within the different groups I have to interact with. One leader is more open and inclusive, and I can approach them with concerns that we can solve with just one meeting, while my direct superior is very indecisive and avoids taking a stand for what I consider the smallest of decisions, and will prolong the inevitable with meeting after meeting and will send me off to other individuals when there is no need to involve anyone else. It has gotten to a point where, I avoid meetings and projects that this leader is involved with as I know I will not get the strong support that I need to execute the project. Conflict is detrimental to a group's ability to work together. Although conflict can never be completely avoided, most personality differences can be worked around if you know how to identify them, understand how they affect the group and learn methods to avoid them. Thompson, Aranda, and Robbins (2001) write about two main types of conflict. The first type of conflict is; emotional conflict, or sometimes called A–type conflict. This conflict can threaten productivity. These personality types can take over a group. They bully the other members into accepting their point of view. They can be overbearing, or use anger to overwhelm any opposition to their ideas. They can be so opinionated that no one else has a chance to speak up or get their point across. The next type of conflict is; cognitive conflict, or sometimes called C–type conflict. This conflict usually revolves around the merits of ideas or plans. Although disagreement can occur, this type of conflict can be used to stimulate creativity. Looking at a problem from different points of view can assist the whole team in problem solving. The method is to attack the idea not the person. This type of conflict usually benefits team functioning. The goal is to turn A–types personalities into C–types. Abstract We deal with conflict on a daily basis, whether it is in our personal lives or professionally. Learning how we, as individuals, best approach conflict resolution will allow us to become better mediators in managerial positions. Also, taking into consideration the different types of conflict resolution styles will help us learn what those individual needs are and gain a better understanding of where the perspective their concerns come from. Managing conflict styles, understanding why conflict occurred, how to move forward, how conflict is perceived, coping with conflict and communication are extremely important in understanding the journey to a positive outcome where conflict is concerned.
