Chemical reactions are the heart of chemistry. People have always known that they exist.
The Ancient Greeks were the firsts to speculate on the composition of matter. They thought that it was possible that individual particles made up matter.
Later, in the Seventeenth Century, a German chemist named Georg Ernst Stahl was the first to postulate on chemical reaction, specifically, combustion. He said that a substance called phlogiston escaped into the air from all substances during combustion.
He explained that a burning candle would go out if a candle snuffer was put over it because the air inside the snuffer became saturated with phlogiston. According to his ideas, wood is made up of phlogiston and ash,...show more content...
There are now many classification systems to classify the different types of reactions. These include decomposition, polymerization, chain reactions, substitute reactions, elimination reactions, addition reactions, ionic reactions, and oxidation–reduction reactions.
Decomposition reactions are reactions in which a substance breaks into smaller parts. As an example, ammonium carbonate will decompose into ammonia, carbon dioxide, and water. Polymerization reactions are reactions in which simpler substances combine to form a complex substance. The thing that makes this reaction unusual is that the final product is composed of hundreds of the simpler reagent (a substance that contributes to a chemical reaction) species. One example is the polymerization of terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol to form the polymer called Dacron, a fibre, or Mylar, in sheet form:

How Chemistry Changed My Life
My parents met while working in their town's chemical factory. They never thought much about the side effects of working with chemicals all day until they had me. When I was born I weighed fifteen pounds and was already able to walk and talk. As soon as my mom and dad realized that I was different, they took me home and kept me away from the world. They were so afraid that I would be taken away and dissected like a frog in a lab.
My other capabilities did not come all at once. One day, I was playing with my ball in the yard and accidentally threw it into the tree. Before I realized it, I was floating up into the air to retrieve it without any effort. I could fly! I was so surprised and thrilled at the same time. Another day, my dad wanted me to guess what he was holding behind his back. I found myself concentrating and discovered that I could see right through him and I could view the necklace that he was holding in his hands! My blonde hair is very long because it grows an inch every week. I have become quite good at disguising my powers, which allows me to blend in with the outside world. There have been times when I risked being discovered. When I see someone in trouble I always try to help. During these times, I use my ultra–ego that I named Super Debbie. The mouth contains a watery substance called saliva. Saliva is important to the whole process of food digestion, because not only does it help with sensing taste, but it is also made up of enzymes that break down the fats and starches in food at a molecular level. The esophagus is a tube where swallowed food travels down to the stomach. The stomach is a muscular sac that acts as a blender and mixes food with acid, hydrochloric acid, which breaks down the swallowed chum and flushes the nutrients into the small intestine (Columbia University, 2010). The hydrochloric acid in the stomach is so powerful it can eat through a leather shoe. However, the stomach contains other chemicals, such as gastric acid, mucus and enzymes that also soften food (Sullivan, 2008). The result thus far in the process of digestion in the stomach is now called chime (Sullivan, 2008). Once the stomach has done its job digesting the food, your dinner, now chime, travels to the small intestine where the final stage of digestion takes place. The remaining food is separated as either waste or nutrients. The nutrients are absorbed and taken in as fuel for the body (will explain in next paragraph) while the waste enters the large intestine and passed through the rectum and anus to leave the body. Chemistry is undoubtedly in one's everyday life. Every day, our bodies undergo chemical reactions and our environment that we live in goes through chemical changes. The first concept or idea that I can use daily is pH levels. The pH of our blood should be about 7.4. If the pH levels increase or decrease, there can be severe health problems causing the abnormal levels, such as metabolic acidosis (pH level is lower than the normal levels) or alkalosis (pH is above expected levels). Another concept that I learned about in this course is the purpose of a catalyst in a reaction. A catalyst is used to speed up a reaction. In the human body, catalysts are enzymes. Enzymes are necessary and crucial to carry out many bodily functions. One of the most important enzymes, in my opinion, is DNA polymerase. DNA polymerase has the important task of synthesizing DNA molecules. DNA, as we know from biology, holds all of our genetic material or profile and is what we pass down from generation to generation. Where on earth would we be without DNA? More importantly, without catalysts, like DNA polymerase, DNA could not be synthesized.

Experiment 14: Preparation of a Dye: Azo Violet

Introduction The purpose of this laboratory experiment was to synthesize azo violet, and conduct a product analysis in the form of a dyeing test and indicator test. Synthesizing azo class dyes typically involves two steps, diazotization and diazonium coupling. Diazotization is the conversion of a p–nitroaniline's amino substituent to a nitrogen–nitrogen triple bond, resulting in the formation of an aryl diazonium salt. It is facilitated with sodium nitrite and hydrochloric acid. Diazonium coupling, an electrophilic aromatic substitution, is the coupling of the aryl diazonium salt and resorcinol to form azo violet. It is facilitated with sodium acetate. Product analysis was conducted on azo violet in an effort to examine its response to the pH of different solutions (indicator test) and confirm its identity (dyeing test).
Data and Results Qualitative observations concerning the synthesis of azo violet can be found on page 52 of carbon–copy notebook.
Discussion A phosphodiesterase (PDE) is any enzyme that has the ability to break down phosphodiester bonds. Enzyme regulation may occur via metal–dye complexes within biological cells. One of the most evident places that we tend to see chemistry's impact is throughout the environment. A big aspect of this that has recently became a popular controversy is the microbeads found in several skin–care products. These tiny pieces of plastic are rinsed down the drain where they absorb chemicals, bacteria, and other harmful substances. Eventually they make their way into our lakes and oceans. These are then essentially little poison pellets waiting to be eaten by a fish who doesn't know any better. And as the food chain works, that poisoned fish is eaten by a bigger fish who is later eaten by a bigger fish until eventually it ends up on your plate, last only to be eaten by you. When you then eat that fish, you're also eating all of the toxins along with it. So, where does chemistry come into this? It's the chemists' jobs at the companies to find a solution– a face wash (or other product) that has the same effect as the microbeads had only without the negative effect on the environment. What is energy? Energy is the ability to do work, it is the "power that comes from the use of physical or chemical resources." In your home energy can come in many forms such as heat, light, and even electricity. The problem is some of us, meaning people, in general, know little to anything about the word energy itself. When we think about energy, we think about the energy it takes to get up in the morning. Sometimes as students we do not notice how much, and when we use energy. In my household, our energy sources consist of natural gas and electricity. The Hot Water Heater that we use to heat our water, is generated by natural gas. Natural gas is a type of energy that comes from deep beneath the earth's surface. Along with heating our water, it helps with washing clothes in our washing machine and even helps dry those clothes. We also have a dishwasher that makes use of both hot water and electricity. My mother stated that "She enjoys having a Natural gas water heater because it helps with saving money". Generally Natural gas is cheaper than electricity when working with water. At some point in being an adult, you have to consider the cost of things and even the benefits that come along with it. Soaps are sodium or potassium salts of long chain organic acids (called fatty acids) like stearic acid and palmitic acid. How is soap manufactured? Soap is made by heating oil with sodium hydroxide. The oil and sodium hydroxide solution are fed into an enclosed reaction vessel under high pressure and heated at high temperature. At this temperature, the reaction is completed in a few minutes. The mixture of soap and glycerol is cooled and a concentrated solution of sodium chloride is added. Glycerol dissolves readily in salt solution but soap does not. So, solid soap separates out from the mixture. It is then removed by centrifugation. While still hot it is sprayed into a hot vacuum chamber to dry it. Perfume is added and the particles are compressed into soap cake.
