Essay about Cigarettes Should be Banned
Smoking cigarettes is common among most adults in the United States, yet it is one of the most dangerous things you can do to yourself. Many people feel that smoking should be made illegal. The reason they may feel this way is because it is very harmful to your health and can lead to death. I strongly agree that cigarettes should be banned from being sold and produced because to me they're considered a dangerous drug.
The first reason that supports my claim of smoking cigarettes should be banned is that it is a "major cause to preventable and premature deaths", according to the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention. The evidence that supports this reason is that around 443,000 cigarette deaths happen each year in the US only....show more content...
Of course adversaries will dispute that the families should not have to pay the costs because it's the smokers' responsibility to pay for their own choices. Yet, these opponents would need to understand that these people are family and they should support them even though they are ill. Even if those family members choose to smoke. Second–Hand smoke is another side effect of smoking. Acoording to The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the
U.S. National Toxicology Program, the U.S. Surgeon General, and the
International Agency for Research on Cancer have classified "secondhand smoke as a known human carcinogen (cancer–causing agent). Inhaling secondhand smoke causes lung cancer in nonsmoking adults. Approximately Mercado3
3,000 lung cancer deaths occur each year among adult nonsmokers in the
United States as a result of exposure to secondhand smoke." The U.S. Surgeon
General estimates that living with a smoker increases a nonsmoker's chances of developing lung cancer by 20 to 30 percent. From these facts it's easy to say how much second hand smoke can affect peoples lives.
The really only reason why smoking has not been banned yet is because of money. That is also the main reason why marijuana is illegal and cigarettes are not. The Government can make a bigger profit of off cigarettes compared to marijuana. Another part to the money issue is that tobacco companies have so much money its almost impossible for them to just shut down. Tobacco is
Tobacco Should Be Banned
Nicotine harms many Today people are debating on whether or not we should ban tobacco products. Productions and sales of tobacco need to be banned because they only cause harm. The text states," Cigarette smoking is responsible for more than 480,000 deaths per year"(U.S. department of health and human services ). This illustrates that thousands of people die each year from smoking. Tobacco products should be banned because it causes addiction, health problems, and harms others. The sell and production of tobacco products need to a be eliminated because it causes addiction. Tobacco producers make tobacco addictive to make profit. The text states,"Cigarettes today deliver more nicotine more quickly than ever before... Tobacco companies also use additives and chemicals to make them more addictive(U.S. department of health and human services). This is why smokers who have the intention to quit often fail. A smokers priority often relies on the tobacco product they take multiple smoke breaks throughout the workday or they will not be able to function. This not only impacts the individual but also family members children may start to feel distance between them and their parent because the parents continuously goes outside to smoke because they are addicted to the nicotine. Smokers rely so much on the product they could have withdrawal symptoms such as frustration, and irritability. Another reason tobacco products should be banned is it causes health problems.
Banning Tobacco Essay
Tobacco
Tobacco has been around for many years, and it should be stopped, but can the economy handle it. The tobacco is reaching young children, and not to mention the nonsmokers as well. The medical effects alone should convince people to stop smoking. Even if the people wanted to quit, it's hard because they are already addicted. If the health doesn't stop people from smoking the cost should because this year the tax on tobacco has gone up dramatically. So now the cost is weakening our pockets. The only ones that win in the tobacco field are the Tobacco Company, because they make all the money. If profits fall, all they have to do is advertise a little harder and profits will roll...show more content...
"Environmental tobacco smoke–the secondhand cigarette smoke breathed by nonsmokers is a known carcinogen and the most dangerous environmental pollutant."(Waxman 1995) Surprisingly secondhand smoke causes as many deaths as the tobacco smokers do. "Most people die from secondhand smoke each year than from car accidents."(Waxman 1995) There are a lot of reasons that causes the deaths from secondhand smoke. "Lung cancer is the best known risk from secondhand smoke."(Wilson 1997) The simple smoke from a cigarette is more complex then it really looks. "Each time a person breaths in smoke about a million particles of very tiny complex materials are breathed in and only 20% of that is breathed out."(Hyde 1990) From these little millions of particles is the reason it causes problems for the human body. The main material in the some is nicotine. "Nicotine is an alkaloid poison found in
Tobacco leaves that defends the plant against insect attacks. Nicotine affects the nervous system."(Mccuen 1997) Nobody wants that in his or her bodies. But people still light up every day knowing well enough that the tobacco smoke will kill them eventually or cause permanent damage to their bodies. The reason is because the nicotine in the cigarettes is very addictive, let me tell you from my personal experience that it is very addictive. As time goes by a person tolerance goes up. "Tolerance of nicotine begins with the first does of nicotine, people
Why We Should Smoking Be Banned
Smoking is an expensive habit. Smokers' claim that it helps relax them and relieves stress but there are more negative effects of smoking outweigh the positive effects. Smoking is a health hazard not only for smokers but also for non–smokers. Smokers have the right to choose what to do with their own body and wellbeing but they should respect non–smokers choice to not be subjected to the smoke. Many people believe that there are good and bad outcomes from smoking. I believe that smoking should be banned because of its effect on one's health, the effect of secondhand smoke, and the hypocrisy of smoking parents encouraging their children to not smoke in their lifetime.
The first reason to ban smoking is obviously health related. Everyone...show more content...
The next reason is the effect of secondhand smoke. Smokers know that they are putting others' health and lives in danger, but they continue to smoke. Smoking around people impacts their health as well. Sometimes, these conditions can be even worse than those of the smokers themselves. There is no justice in that. E. Desapriya states, "Recent reports from the US surgeon general show that more than 126 million people are exposed to secondhand smoke every day in the United States, with nearly 22 million of these persons being children" (1158). This proves that eople who smoke not only affect themselves but they also affect those around them because of their habit. It's time for smokers to understand the risks they put everyone in and take responsibility for it. Smokers argue that their rights are being overstepped if there would be a ban on smoking, but non–smokers also have rights. They have the right to clean, fresh air to breathe. India has implemented a ban on public smoking. It has become mandatory to have no smoking zones in all restaurants and recreational centers. Kirsten Bell describes, "Having conquered the city's indoor spaces, tobacco control advocates have also pushed for the expansion of smokefree legislation into outdoor environs" (105). Bell is explaining that Canada is also a country that has adopted a smoke–free environment for outdoors. This ban may seem like it is affecting
Why Smoking Should Be Banned
Introduction
Smoking bans are policies, which include occupational safety, regulations regarding health, and criminal laws, which prohibit tobacco smoking in public areas and in work places. The rationale behind these laws is to prevent non–smokers from the effects of second–hand smoke that may among other things result in lung cancer, heart diseases, emphysema and many other diseases. Smoking ban laws make smoking indoors in many countries worldwide illegal, with scientific evidence clearly showing that tobacco smoking is as harmful to the non–smokers as it is to the smokers in a smoker's environment.
In this paper, the writer focuses on the legal, economic, political, as well as the social implications of these smoking bans on the...show more content...
This is clearly evidenced by the nearly 100 million Americans suffering from chronic respiratory conditions such as emphysema, bronchitis, and asthma, making them vulnerable to any kind of second–hand cigarette smoke. Individuals without such respiratory complications are equally not exempt from the deadly effects of inhaling second–hand smoke from cigarettes even if it is for short periods.
Benefits of Smoking Bans
Research studies indicate a reduced influx of patients suffering respiratory infections to emergency rooms and hospitals because of the introduced smoking bans. The studies have also revealed a considerable decrease in cases of patients with problems related to the heart due to smoking bans. Smoking bans immensely minimize the smoking effects on individuals with asthma, thus, improving the quality of their lives. The analysis of smoking ban studies done in Ireland and California have brought the CDC (Center for Disease Control) to confirm that smoking bans generate a decrease in respiratory warning signs like wheezing, shortness of breadth, and coughs (Hudsson 31). The studies have also shown improvements in the quality and general health of asthmatic individuals, as well as improved lung functioning for people such as bartenders, who formerly worked in cigarette smoke–filled areas.
Smoking bans have been proven to reduce the risks of strokes. A recent study in Arizona shows that due to smoking bans in the region, there
